Playdates & braving the cold

Writer: Hoekema FamilyHoekema Family

I send my babies out into this world with zero expectations on the families that they stay in contact with me but of course hope that many will.

I was graced with the presence of 7 of my past pups over the weekend and I couldn't have been in more of a blissful space. My 'Sea of White' babies, whom most were over 2 yrs. old. All Big, beautiful, happy and thriving. All were obviously very well taken care of and spoiled just like they deserve to be.

It was a gorgeous sunny day and look where these dogs wanted to play!!! In the shaded frosty area of the yard! Full sploots to take advantage of the chill of the ground. Balls were taken down, frisbees were chased, zoomies were had, and plenty of games of tag took place. Everyone was all smiles, got along perfectly and had a grand time.

It's astonishing how well these dogs do in the cold, always searching out places to cool off. You buy them a big expensive dog bed and they choose to sleep on your hard cold tile floor. Take them out into the sunshine and they lay in the shade. Don't get me wrong, my dogs personally are sunbathers and love the warmth but in general they do exceptional in all sorts of weather.

Here my little Anya is absolutely sun bathing to the greatest degree and loving every minute of it. She's now almost 14 wks. old and the growth rate on this kid was massive this week. She took a huge leap from baby looking to a full blown little dog. You can even see the difference between these sun bathing photos that were taken in the beginning of the week vs. the rest of these photos that were taken at the end of the week. Hold onto your babies while they are small everyone because in the blink of an eye they are grown right in front of your eyes. A common statement at this last playgroup was 'I miss when they were little' It goes by way too fast!

The chill and down right nip to the air this week has definitely been a bit challenging. Not my most favorite temps! but the second I get outside in the wee hours of the morning to greet my pack, the swarm of joy around my feet makes everything a bit easier. The kettle is constantly brewing hot water to make the outside drinking water into a nice warm 'tea' for them. Since doing this they drink SO much more water. I also take full advantage of the brewing kettle and carry around my lemon ginger tea first thing in the morning. Another thing that eases the morning chill. Then as soon as that sun peek over the horizon everything just smooths right out.

Paw and nose wax goes onto paw pads, nipples and noses every night to beat the dryness of these winter months. Extra fish oil and more warm water goes into meals.

The chill hasn't slowed them down though. Plenty of playtime continues. The little fire hydrant is always being 'fought' over even though it's never with growls. Take downs, decapitations and plenty of more games of chase with the beloved waffle ball took place this week. The entertainment around here is simply endless.

My pack is tight as ever, loving every minute of each other. Everyone has knit together like 6 peas in a pod splendidly.

Anya continues to snuggle with Tonka and Meiko continues to 'try' to put Tonka in his place so she can get all the pats from me! Goofy girl!

Speaking of Meiko, next week she officially is at her soonest mark of when we are expecting her to cycle around for her next litter with Tonka to begin. She's on close watch now of course and I'm hopeful that things will turn soon. She loves being a mama as you can see in this past photo of her with one of her past litters. Families are eager and waiting for their journey to begin and I can't wait to bless them with this new start.

Isla, Leia and Neema also send all their love to you all. Stay warm out there everyone! Make lots of tea, run in circles, romp with your dogs and dream of what's to come.
